From rubbish to life

A garden of dignity among the shacks of Níjar. A group of young people from the Sa-Fa Communities in Madrid returned to Nijar (Almería, Spain) a few days before Christmas. Surrounded by shacks, they cleared away the rubbish that littered the area and planted species of plants suitable for the location and climate. In this way, they managed to make the place habitable, transforming a source of unsanitary conditions into a “living space”.

Walking with others, offering hope, caring for others, and allowing oneself to be found by God appeared to be inseparable dimensions of the same experience. They did not resolve structural injustice, but they did point to a path: that of a faith that allows itself to be touched by reality and a citizenship that is built on encounter. A faith that does justice, a justice that seeks reconciliation and springs from faith.
