The Brothers of the Holy Family of Burkina Faso, were born in the Apostolic Vicariate of Ouagadougou, in the parish of St Paul of Guilongou with a group of catechists students in 1945. The first profession was held on 8 January, 1950, they were 5 Brothers in the first Community of Guilongou. On 12 February, 1952, the Postulancy of the Brothers is moved to Sâaba, some 15 from Ouagadougou.
The years 1952-1958 were a hard period for the Brothers. The spiritual background was faulty and no Fathers were willing to take care truly of the formation of the future Brothers. Bishop Soquet, the Bishop of Ouagadougou, addressed then to the Superior General of the Brothers of the Holy Family of Belley, Brother Tharcisius, asking for help.
On 3 October, 1958, Brother Camille MERCIER (France), Brother Sylvester PIA (Italy), and Brother Alonso RODRÍGUEZ (Spain) reach Ouagadougou. They took soon charge of the formation of the Brothers, of the organization of the Communities and of the different activities in order to give new life to the young Congregation.
On 2 February, 1959, Rome signed a decree of the merging (No. 1640/58) between the two Congregations. This union brought dynamism and trust; it was noticed especially in the identity, the apostolate, the vocation and the formation. The three elder Brothers were John-Baptist BUNKUNGU, John-Mary KOALGA and Louis BAZIE, who after three months of novitiate in the Institute of the Brothers of Belley, were admitted to make perpetual profession in the same Institute on 30 March, 1959. From now on, the Congregation of the Brothers of the Holy Family of Belley, founded by Brother Gabriel TABORIN, was rooted in the African land, in a Mission land, having Sâaba as the main House.
