In the month of June, we are celebrating four solemnities; among them is the solemnity of Sacred Heart of Jesus. In every language, in every age, the heart is regarded as the natural symbol of love and affection; it represents the totality of the person. What more natural and expressive symbol is there, than of the excessive love of Jesus than His Sacred Heart? A circular letter written on January 6, 1878 by Brother Amadeus, emphasizes the relationship between the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the spirituality of the Congregation. He wrote: “The devotion to the divine Heart of Jesus started within the Holy Family: Mary and Joseph were the first to give adoration, love and thanksgiving due to him”.  In this Novena we will pray and meditate on how Mary and Joseph were shown devotion to the divine Heart of Jesus.

Day 16: Mary’s devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Obedience. Despite being greatly troubled at the words of the angel, Mary’s response shows great devotion to the Son of God and her faithfulness. She is not afraid to voice her questions, but in the end, she showed her devotion through obedience.

Prayer for every day:

God our Father, who raised up Venerable Brother Gabriel Taborin in the Church
to promote christian education, catechesis and liturgical animation,
grant that, by sharing his charism,
we may fulfil our mission today for the good of the family and society
with the strength of your Spirit.
And, if it is your will, grant that he be included in the number of the saints,
granting us through his intercession the grace we need…
(mention the names of the people for whom we want to pray).
We ask this with insistence through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Day 17: Joseph’s devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Obedience. He was greatly disturbed by the pregnancy of Mary. His initial reaction was to break the engagement. He did not want to cause her further shame. Therefore, he decided to act quietly. However, the intervention of the Angel of God made him to understand God’s will. In spite of the public humiliation, he would face, he chose obedience because of the Love and faith that he had in God. He showed his devotion through obedience.

Prayer for every day:

Day 18: Mary and Joseph’s devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Chastity. We are well educated about the virginity of Mary and there are many studies about Her, what about Joseph’s virginity? Let us hear the beautiful and sublime words of St. Bernardin of Siena: “How can a discreet mind think that the Holy Ghost would have united by such a union any soul to the soul of such a Virgin unless most like her in the practice of virtue? Whence I believe that this most holy man Joseph was most pure in virginity, most profound in humility, most ardent in charity, most high in contemplation, and most solicitous for his spouse.” So much for St. Joseph in his relationship with Mary. They showed their devotion through chastity.

Prayer for every day:

Day 19: Mary and Joseph’s devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Poverty. St. Joseph was only a poor carpenter, and Mary chose to marry him out of love for poverty. This is very much clear that Mary and Joseph were poor. We see at her purification in the temple that she did not offer a lamb, which was the offering prescribed in Leviticus for those who could afford it, for a son she shall bring a lamb (Lev. 12:6) but she offered two turtle doves, or two pigeons, which was the oblation prescribed for the poor. Mary and Joseph showed their devotion through Poverty.

Prayer for every day:

Day 20: Mary and Joseph’s devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Faith. Without question, Mary and Joseph’s leading qualities such as trust, sensitiveness, willingness, honesty, righteousness made them put their trust in God. They did not always know all the details, but they acted in faith knowing God would lead them to the next step. They showed their devotion through faith.

Prayer for every day:

Day 21: Mary and Joseph’s devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Prudence. Prudence is the virtue that enabled them to consider their options reasonably and to choose the right course of action in the light of faith. This is what happened at the Annunciation. “She… pondered, wondered, asked questions and gave her consent”. Because of prudence, St. Joseph was able to accept what the Angel told him in a dream multiple time. Through prudence they were able to do the will of God in all the circumstances. They showed their devotion through prudence.

Prayer for every day:

Day 22: Mary and Joseph’s devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Suffering. When Simeon prophesied at the presentation of Jesus in the Temple regarding Mary’s suffering in the future, she would understand what will happen to her, and she still chose also to suffer. The greater the blessing the greater the associated suffering. There is no existed blessing than Jesus and Mary for Joseph. Jesus and Mary were Joseph’s greatest blessings, but also associated with these blessings were incredible sufferings. He suffered because he truly loved them. They showed their devotion through suffering.

Prayer for every day:

Day 23: Mary and Joseph’s devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Silence. Nowhere in the Bible do we hear a word from the great St. Joseph. Mary sometimes kept silent too as it is mentioned in the episode of the Loss of Jesus in the Temple. She kept silent to the reply of Jesus in the Temple. This silence helped them to hear God’s voice and to understand the will of God; moreover, it helped them to understand Jesus and his feelings. So, they showed their devotion through silence.

Prayer for every day:

Day 24: Brother Gabriel’s devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Brother Gabriel showed the power of pure faith through the above virtues of Mary and Joseph. (Obedience, Chastity, Poverty, Faith, Prudence, Suffering and Silence). We look at his accomplishments, how much he did for the little Congregation of the Brothers of the Holy Family. Through his example, we can do with our lives by saying wholeheartedly “I am the Lord’s servant” as Mary, Joseph and Brother Gabriel said. Mary, Joseph and Bro. Gabriel showed their devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus by loving and serving him whole-heartedly.
