San José – Salto – La Aguada – Pocitos – Minas – Canelones
The Fraternity of San José de Mayo
The Fraternity of San José de Mayo is formed by 14 persons, among them there are 4 couples.
All the members with specific commitments in the local Church, in their quality of “near” to the Community of Brothers for different reasons (parents of ex students, teachers, friends), have found a specific way of living their Christian faith with “Nazarene eyes”.
They started gathering since 1996, and they do so monthly; they are accompanied by the Community of Brothers. They have their own space where they have the meetings and where they have the materials for prayer and reflection. Invited by the Community, they participate periodically in the Eucharist.
In the topic of formation they travelled different stages:
– Knowledge and reflection on the Project of Statutes, the life and work of Br. Gabriel (especially in the Year of the Bicentenary where various members participated in the Pilgrimage).
– Following the rhythm of the liturgical year, above all in celebrations related to the Nazarene-Taborinian spirituality.
– Deepening the topics of the formative cycle of the Provincial Area of Identity and Charism.
They have also some moments for days of reflection as local Fraternity and participation in national and international meetings.
At present there are no members with compromise, but with the intention of doing it next year by some members.
Nazarene Fraternity of Salto
This Fraternity was founded in August 1995. At present it has 14 members: 3 Brothers (Edgardo, Manuel and Victorino) and 11 lay persons, who meet once in a month. The themes to follow are centred in the life of Br. Gabriel and the Nazarene spirituality. Occasionally, we deal with a topic of the Church. The group is formed by teachers and parents of students of the School. This year we will work the material given by Brother Provincial: “Brother Gabriel, disciple… and we?”, highlighting the experience of the 150 years of the death of Br. Gabriel. After the transfer of Br. Germán (B.A.), temporarily the role of Advisor was taken by Deacon Fernando Rossi.
There are two members that have done their compromises: Fernando Rossi (permanent) and Marina Migliaro (for one year).
In our meetings we carry out activities such as the Way of the Cross in the Holy Week with the rest of the Educational Community, finishing in front of the Chapel. We share retreats or recollection days, we have days of formation…
Nazarene Fraternity of La Aguada
A long trajectory: 1995-2014.
On Saturday 3 June 1995, we gathered for the first time a group of lay persons linked to the Holy Family School of Montevideo, summoned by then Brother Provincial, Néstor Achigar. We didn’t know we were to put the first stone of the oldest Fraternity of the Uruguayan Province (St Joseph). That day, Br. Néstor spoke about the opening of the laity promoted by the II Vatican Council, the Church’s documents, and the General Chapter of 1993.
Because of this, we were all invited to share the Nazarene charism lived by the Brothers, and in fact, we lived together with them, but that we had to live it in a more conscientious and committed way, following a path of formation on the charism.
Years passed, and after clarifying doubts, 7 women made the first compromise in the year 2000. All remember vividly that “formal” celebration in which we integrated ecclesialy to the Institute when giving our consent before the Provincial, then Br. Edgardo Bruzzoni, in the chapel of the Holy Family School, our home. We were the first in the Province to take such step, other Fraternities accompanied us on that day.
The first seven with compromise were: Beatriz Estefan, Marina Fernández, Beatriz López, Libertad López, Liliana Moleda, Rosa Ramos and Alina Rivera. Everyone has her own family, work and church commitments. Something that animated was to be part of the Institute and that we were not separated from our commitments, but it gave us sense to live them with joy and grace, like the Holy Family of Nazareth, in the work, in daily life and the mutual love. The Fraternity gave us a space to grow in faith, to share it from the Nazarene charism. An expression that we remember constantly: we are and we want to be “a space of gratuity”. It was not to add activities (all we had enough in the school or outside school).
With skills and mistakes, with enthusiasm and backing down, with people who passed, though they understood later that that was not their path, and with solid and enriching integrations from 2008, we have gone on during these nearly twenty years. We are certain that it is the Spirit who convokes and supports our belonging to the Institute in the dear Fraternity of La Aguada.
We highlight three important moments of the year, spaces of formation and strengthening of our links in which all the Fraternities we are present: The meeting of St Joseph in March, the retreat in Florida mid-year, and the meeting in Piedras Blancas at the end of the year. In the retreat of Florida it is custom to do our compromise, the first of us we have compromise for life, while others are renewing every three years, or for one year. It is a shared path, but lived in freedom, so that nobody is obliged to such compromise, but it is a very personal decision, that the group, as well as the Brothers, respects.
The present members of the Fraternity are: Cecilia Carnelli, Edgardo Duarte, Beatriz Estefan (who is also the Animator), Nelly Fagúndez, Marina Fernández, Beatriz López, Libertad López, Eduardo Munyo, Manuel Nieto, Cristina Picos, Rosa Ramos, Alina Rivera and Virginia Rodríguez.
As Advisory Brothers we had Br. Néstor, during many years, then for a short time, Br. Aurelio Arreba, and now we have Br. José María de la Fuente. Together with them and all the Brothers, we make our pilgrimage sharing life, faith and charism.
Belonging to the Institute in our status of lay people has a deep meaning of being and feeling “people of God, pilgrims”, where we travel with the Brothers the same path.
Nazarene Fraternity “Br. Vincent Barreix” of Pocitos
This Fraternity was born in 1996 as wish of the Community of Brothers: to share with the laity the richness of our Nazarene charism. All the community committed to accompany the laity who integrates it.
The Community agreed about whom invite for the Fraternity. The fundamental criterion: Those who manifested clearly an experience of Christian faith, and that felt in spiritual tune with the Community. Another important aspect: people apt for growing in faith. The first to accept the invitation were members of the personnel of the St John the Baptist School, some were or some had been in contact with the Brothers somehow. In one of the first sessions, on the last Saturday of the month, we chose as symbol a violet plant, whose flower is the symbol of the virtue which most shines in Nazareth: the HUMILITY. On a piece of paper we drew different symbols of what could be a fraternity: a house, a cultivated land, a river, a bridge… These meaningful elements helped us to start preparing common codes of our attempt.
The prayer has occupied an important place in our meetings. Some years ago we have the meetings on the last Tuesday of the month to coincide with the day on which weekly we gather with the Brothers, praying altogether in the Eucharistic celebration of the Community. The members of the Fraternity encouraged also a greater importance in the prayer on the part of the students of the School.
In the formative process, a lot of importance has been given to the knowledge of the history of the Institute, the documents which express and resume our spirituality, and an itinerary of approaching the Holy Scripture. All these elements have been very well welcomed and assimilated by the Fraternity. Some of the members of the first hour have not continued. New members have been integrated, especially families linked to the Educational Community. In several opportunities, members of the Fraternity have participated in moments of formation proposed by the Area of Identity of the Province, at Congregational level, participating in the international meetings of the Fraternities. These moments have always been richness for all. The Brothers feel the richness that means the Nazarene Fraternity, and the lay people express often what the Fraternity means for our lives.
At present, besides de 4 Brothers, the Fraternity is formed by 16 members, included Fr Guillermo with whom we celebrate the Eucharist. On some occasions we have Lectio Divina; sharing personal experiences and other activities. Among them: the study of the documents of the Institute, the reading and analysis of the life of the Saints like St John Mary Vianney or some documents of the Church, enjoying a video or a movie and the video-forum. We participate in retreats and meetings of the Fraternities, we gather some weekend around a good table and collaborate in activities in the dominical Mass of the parish of our neighbourhood. We are integrated in celebrations and activities of the School such as the ‘Colegiadas’, Eucharistic celebrations, end of the year feasts and other activities that make the life of our dear St John School. Last year we organized, together with a group of parents, who will join the Fraternity, the Day of the Family.
Somehow we have transmitted what we live in our Fraternity to our children who share our experience of faith integrating themselves in youth groups, sharing missionary activities and walking with us growing in faith.
Members of the Fraternity are: Lilián Ulián, José Luis Aquesolo, Laura Franzini and Alvaro Rey, Gabriela Marcotte and José Luis Facello, Susana Cremona and Oscar Tricárico, Mónica Berdías and Gabriel Rovetta, Ma. Dina Quinteros and Daniel González, Br. José María de la Fuente, Br. Aurelio Arreba, Fr. Guillermo Porras and our Advisor Brother Héctor da Rosa. In this process, they have done their compromise for one year: Laura and Gabriela; for three years, Ma. Dina, and in a permanent way, Daniel, who is part of the coordinator team.
Undoubtedly, our Fraternity is favoured with the spirit of family which is lived and strengthened in the shared prayer in community. And the Brothers have been a faithful and constant support.
Nazarene Fraternity of Minas
In 2012 we took up again the meetings of the Nazarene Fraternities, in the School of Minas, Lavalleja (Uruguay), thanks to the generous support of Br. Ernesto Cordero and the lay person, Edgardo Duarte.
We have knowledge that previous years, Br. Juan Bosco tried to form the association, but the proposal was not carried out.
At present, members of the Nazarene Fraternity are: Teachers of the School, Agustín Briano, Rossana Paroldo, Verónica López, Mariana Correa, Rosario Salazar, Karina Furtado, María Melgar, Estela de León; the headmistress of the high school, Mariela Saravia, and an ex catechist, Marta Toledo.
We carry out our meetings monthly, and we participated in meetings, retreats in Montevideo, San José, Florida and San Antonio de Arredondo.
We are all catechists and these meetings help us to get-together and live the charism of the Holy Family in our classrooms.
Nazarene Fraternity of Canelones
This history starts in 1998, when the Brothers who lived in the Community of Canelones, invited us to have a retreat “Weekend as in Nazareth” in Villa Guadalupe, like the one our children had lived.
We continued gathering in the Formation house of Cananlones and next year they invited us to have a retreat in the Good Shepherd in Florida. Two companions attended and they lived so intensely that after returning they encouraged many of us… The Fraternity was consolidating with 5 couples and 3 women. Bros. Aurelio Arreba and Eduardo Semproni were accompanying us. We prayed, reflected the Word and started to know Brother Gabriel, his work and teachings. Always having the Holy Family as our model of life to follow.
They have passed several years when Br. Justo Rubio visited us and spoke about a “compromise”. This caused different reactions, some were questioned why and other for what purpose. So, from that group, 5 members: Ferza and Alfredo Del Hoyo, Liliana Rué, Aracelly Morena and Susana Sambolino, decided to do the first compromise and in the Liceo Guadalupe was held the celebration. At present, 3 of these members have definitive compromises.
At present, 7 women formed the Fraternity: Mary, Liria, Liliana, Aracelli, Nelly and Susana, accompanied by Br. Ricardo.
Along this time, our advisors have been: Br. Aurelio, Br. Javier, Br. Tarsicio, Br. Eduardo, Br. Rogelio and now Br. Ricardo. Sometimes, Br. Néstor (Provincial of Our Lady of Hope) also accompanies us. We meet once a month, we pray, we reflect the Word of God, we study the life and work of Br. Gabriel, we celebrate the important events of our lives, we share the celebrations like Easter, Christmas, we participate in meetings and retreats with other Fraternities: March with the Brothers and Fraternities in San José, retreat in the Good Shepherd, meeting in Piedras Blancas, retreats and meetings in San Antonio de Arredondo (Córdoba), Pilgrimage to the land of Br. Gabriel and participation in the Congress of Valladolid, bearing always the style of the Holy Family of Nazareth, with Br. Gabriel as inspiring source of Prayer, Work and Love.
We feel that our strength is in the prayer and the service. The important is to bear witness to our families, friends, companions of work, our neighbourhood and children to whom we give catechesis, since 6 members are catechists and another is assistant in caring people with mental problems.
