Distillery Holy Family. Belley

On 20 November 2025, the distillery’s name change to ‘Destilería Sagrada Familia’ (Holy Family Distillery) was announced in Belley. The Chartreuse company asked the General Council for permission to use this name in order to commemorate the shared history between the Congregation and the distillery.

In addition to seven Brothers from the two communities in Belley, many representatives from different associations in Belley and the surrounding area were present, including people from the business community, the world of tourism, and the municipality, led by the mayor.

The president of Chartreuse, as host, gave the opening address and made a comprehensive presentation with historical references taken from our documents on the distillery and with a wealth of information from its inception to the present day. He also referred to the family spirit. A significant moment was the tribute he paid to Brother Henri Marie, in celebration of his centenary and the product line that bears his name.

The mayor then congratulated everyone on the work done and ended his speech with a few words about the role of the Brothers, their relationship with Chartreuse and education, missionary service and thanks to everyone for the welcome. He also praised the presence of the Brothers of the Holy Family in Belley.

Brother Juan José took the floor, thanking everyone for their presence and their work in relaunching the distillery. He highlighted the collaboration between the Grande Chartreuse and the Brothers with some historical facts: the Carthusians subsidised five schools run by the Brothers and there were about 25 schools run by the Brothers near the Grande Chartreuse. He also recalled the spirit of solidarity that has always characterised the proceeds from sales, which have been used to support the Brothers’ missions. This aid has been an important factor in giving hope and life to those in need, an idea very much in line with the Chapter’s motto: ‘Witnesses of hope and promoters of life’. The event ended with a moment of sharing among all those present.
