"If it is God’s work..."

The Venerable Brother Gabriel Taborin, born in Belleydoux (France), in 1799, is the Founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Holy Family.

A deep faith, received as a gift of God through a strong faith family, lit the way of his life in a moment of contrasts and moral ruins that follow the French Revolution. Precisely this unfavourable situation was for him an opportunity to go to God, taking him in generously in his heart.

And the Spirit, to whom Gabriel asked every day how to be witness of the Gospel in that time, in that place, in those circumstances, with trust and simplicity, led him, -a layman- , to enrich the Church with a new religious family.

The characteristics, assumed and passed on by the new Congregation, show the gifts (and also the limitations) that the Spirit has given us through our Founder: He was much closed to his family, he liked catechizing to adults and children, teaching at rural schools, taking care of the religious ceremonies, the Gregorian chant, and decorating the places of worship.

"Simply Brother" will be the core of the Brothers’ charisma and identity; this expression invites to be all brothers, following the spirit of family common of the Holy Family of Nazareth.

"To educate the youth through the catechesis and the teaching at school" will be the more important service than the Brothers offer to the Church and to the society.

"To help the parish priest" in the works and pastoral activities addressed to the young people, families, elder people… will be one of the Br. Gabriel’s brilliant intuitions
.

As every work which comes from God, the “creature” of Gabriel also found lots of difficulties, but “if it is from God, he will know how to hold up”, he declared. Nowadays, the Congregation is spread around the world. The Brother Gabriel Taborin died in Belley (France), in 1864.
